Member Notice: Credit Cards — "See ID"
Retail Best Practices — Protect Yourself Against Chargebacks
Some FCR members report their stores have encountered customers who present a credit card for payment of their purchases, but in the signature area the customer has written a phrase such as, "See ID" rather than sign the card. Merchants should be aware that a credit card that is not signed by the cardholder is considered invalid by both of the major card organizations. Accepting a card without a signature could lead to a chargeback.
New Secure Certificate Of Indian Status What Retailers Need to Know
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada is planning to issue a new secure Certificate of Indian Status (CIS) in 2008. This card will be used by the Canadian aboriginal community to receive statutory tax exemptions from merchants and service providers. Flowers Canada Retail wants to ensure that retailers and their front line staff are well aware of this new piece of identification and its features.

The latest decision of the Copyright Board of Canada that called for the imposition of levies (taxes) on iPods. The Board went even further and stated that levies could potentially be imposed on computer hard drives, cell phones and other devices upon which music can be downloaded.

Shortly after the recent provincial election, Family Day was proclaimed as a new statutory holiday in the Province of Ontario. Family Day is to be held on the third Monday of every February, beginning in 2008. This year, the holiday falls on Monday, February 18

Following the Ontario Liberal Party's election victory on October 10, 2007, the new government's first order of business was to introduce a new holiday. Family Day, originally proposed in the 2007 Ontario Liberal Plan for the election, "Moving Forward Together," is to be held on the third Monday each February, beginning in 2008.

Minimum Wage Increase Possible for British Columbia
Members Asked to Provide Thoughts on Potential Increase
For the past several months, there has been significant discussion in the media and at the political level in B.C. about increasing the province's minimum wage. The opposition NDP, along with the B.C. Federation of Labour, is calling for an increase from $8 to $10 per hour. Thus far, the provincial government has not expressed any interest in raising the minimum wage, but that may change as the next provincial election draws closer.
