how to improve your product?

In the first of a special four-part series for wholesalers, leading Dutch retail florist and florist trainer Ton Verzijl explores marketing's 4 Key P's: product, price, place & promotion. This month: products.

"While it's true that retailers' ordering their flowers online is a growing challenge for traditional wholesalers, there's just no replacing the 'real thing' of seeing, touching and smelling 'live' fresh flowers at your local wholesalers! And there never will be. But to capitalize on this 'added-value', wholesalers must continuously take fresh looks at their businesses through the eyes of the retail florists who've come to buy their products."

Retail mentality
"So wholesalers must also have a retailer's mentality. What do I, a retail florist, want to see at my wholesalers? The same that my customers want to see in my flower shop. Fresh, beautiful flowers presented in inspiring bouquets and arrangements that say, "Hey, look at what you can do with this stunning flower variety!' Retailers and wholesalers both constantly need great new sales ideas. Surrounded by thousands of wholesale flowers, I want to see for instance a small sign saying, 'This is New!', next to the new flowers just in."

One-stop-shopping
"One of my favorite wholesalers in Holland has created a great 'one-stop-shopping' place for retailers. This wholesaler knows that we retailers have decided not to order our flowers online today. Instead, we battled through traffic to come to his place in person. And he also knows we really don't want to drive someplace else again, so he offers us flowers and more: design extras, wrapping paper, promotional materials… and even great product-specific extras. Like, for example, if he has long-stem tulips in stock, then he'll also have a good selection of long-stem flower vases to sell with them."

Impulse buying
"In terms of product presentation, some of the best wholesale establishments I've visited around the world don't look all that much different from retail flower shops. Just like retailers, these wholesalers offered weekly and seasonal themes, like 'Tulip Time', and special offers. And to keep their product selections enticing to buy at all times, these wholesalers employed a floral professional to create and present beautiful and inspiring floral arrangements. Always remember, impulse buying is a proven sales fact: customers often decide what to buy at the last moment, inspired by the great products they see presented before them!"

Spotlight
"Wholesalers who merely shift flower buckets and boxes will find it increasingly difficult to compete in this, our online flower ordering age. The time is now for wholesalers to put the spotlight - literally and figuratively - on all the wonderful floral products they have in stock for us retailers to see, smell and touch! After all, this is a big reason why we retailers have switched off our computers and gone to our wholesalers in person to buy our flowers!"

Teleflora launches the flower blog

Teleflora announced the launch of its Flower Blog, an online community for anyone passionate about flowers. The Flower Blog has a wide range of posts about flowers and living well -- celebrations, decorating, pop-culture, fashion, celebrities, gardening and traveling.

"Teleflora is excited to launch the Flower Blog," said Shawn Weidmann, President, Teleflora. "We felt it was important to have an online community for people to exchange ideas and share their passion about the world of flowers. The floral industry is a niche group of innovative and creative people and this is Teleflora's way of bringing their voice to the forefront."

The Flower Blog launched with seven different categories that each speak to flower enthusiasts and where their interests lie. A calendar includes the latest flower shows and exhibits all over the country and an out-n-about section provides snapshots of events where Teleflora arrangements can be seen. For those readers who are planning weddings, baby showers or holiday/occasion specific parties, the blog will provide the latest in floral trends and design. Over time, additional sections will be added. With the Flower Blog, readers will be one step ahead of everyone else.

In addition, florists will have an opportunity to share their experiences and exciting behind-the-scene stories about life in their communities. The Flower Blog will even offer readers a chance to learn interesting flower facts, read floral-related poems and quotes or even their horoscopes.

For more information about Teleflora's blog, go to http://www.teleflora.com/flowerblog/

key variables affect profitability of Columbian flower farms

The Association of Floral Importers of Florida (AFIF) has issued a fact sheet on the key variables that are affecting the cut flower business in Colombia. Ethiopian flower exports on the increase

Ethiopian Flower Exports May Rise to $186 Million in 2008
Ethiopia may export $186 million in flowers to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East this year, the Ethiopian Producer Exporters Association said.  Exports last year are estimated at $125 million, Kassahun Mammo, executive director of the association, said in an interview in the capital, Addis Ababa, today.  This is a sector where we can generate foreign exchange for the country,'' he said.

Flower production in Ethiopia, Africa's second-biggest exporter of the blooms after Kenya, is increasing since the government offered farmers incentives to start flower f66 spdlarms, including waiving duties on imported machinery and grace periods for tax payments.

Guinness recognizes Vietnam's most expensive flower bouquet

VietNamNet Bridge – One hundred gemstone pieces stuck on petals make a wedding flower bouquet worth around VND2 billion or US$125,000. The Guinness World Record Book recognised this bouquet as the most expensive wedding flower bouquet in Vietnam.

The bouquet, called “Thien hoa bach ngoc” (Thousands of flowers, hundreds of gemstones), is 1.7kg in weight, 45cm in diameter, 90cm in length. It consists of white roses, white lilies, white orchids, moonflowers, the root of a 100-year-old ficus, several kinds of stones, paints, feathers and gemstones, including 90 two-carat red ruby facets, nine one-carat diamonds, and a 21.6-carat star ruby.

The bouquet was created by craftsmen from DOJI Gems & Trade JSC and LyLy Flower Supermarket in Hanoi. DOJI’s General Director Do Minh Phu said the 100 gemstones symbolise 100 happy years of the couple. The ruby is the symbol of the sun, freedom and power. The diamond expresses purity and innocence.

Phu said many people have asked about hiring or buying the bouquet to use in their weddings but DOJI refused. The firm wants to keep the special bouquet for display.

“However, we are ready to provide such wedding flower bouquets in the 2008 wedding season,” Phu said.

The Guinness World Record Book recently recognised it as the most expensive bouquet in Vietnam. The bouquet is now being kept at DOJI company, 9th floor, Ruby Plaza Centre, 44 Le Ngoc Han Street, Hanoi and it will be available for the public to view on June 30.
